Handy Tips When Checking A Kangaroo or Wallaby Pouch for JOEYS

STEPS:

Safety First 🛑

  1. Your SAFETY comes first and is paramount.

  2. BEFORE stopping, be mindful of traffic and aware of risks to you and other road users.

  3. When pulling over, ensure your vehicle is stopped in a safe position, turn on hazard lights and scan the road ahead and behind BEFORE exiting your vehicle.

  4. Is the animal clearly deceased? IF SAFE to do so, move the deceased animal off the roadway. (If unsure, step away from the road and call your local wildlife shelter)

  5. Is the animal alive? DO NOT attempt to move an injured kangaroo or Wallaby without assistance from a trained individual.

  6. Call your local wildlife shelter or police, they will advise you what to do and ask for information about your location.

Checking for Joeys

  1. If the animal is deceased, check is it a female? [ You will know 😉 ]

  2. Is their any obvious movement around the pouch or under the deceased animal?

  3. Can you see a Joey, is it still breathing and moving? Does Joey have fur and are its eyes visible and open.

  4. Is the Joey still attached to mother’s teat? DO NOT attempt to remove, as this may damage Joeys jaw. If attached call your local wildlife shelter for advice.

  5. If Joey is off teat and can be safely removed or is out of pouch, gently wrap and place the Joey down your shirt to induce warmth.

  6. Take joey immediately to your local wildlife shelter (or Vet if shelter is uncontactable)
